What is a “Bar Camp” anyway?

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

By femi

I received a second email this morning, asking just such question. I like the definition wikipedia gives for it.

According to Wikipedia, BarCamp is an international network of user generated conferences — open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants — often focusing on early-stage web applications, and related open source technologies, social protocols, and open data formats.

For us, it will be a meeting of the minds

# Who? Anyone who is interested in technology including but not limited to telecommunications, software/hardware, web 2.0, opensource/enterprise solution, - and all things in between.
# What? A good opportunity to share ideas, start conversations and build connections with people and organizations making a positive impact in Africa

Is BarCamp free?

Yes! It is free! You can just register here and also at the registration table and come into the event! Food will also be provided for Lunch and possibly, breakfast. We are still trying to get catering for breakfast.

How to Get involved

There are loads of ways to participate…

* Sponsor Barcamp (we rely on sponsorship and have a range of options available to suit all budgets)
* Help us organise (Volunteers)
* Register, turn up and participate
* Write about Barcamp
* Tweet Barcamp
* Tell your friends about Barcamp
* Change your profile pictures to the Barcamp Logo here

Barcamp Nigeria really is about you using this opportunity to step up and participate.  It’s a “user generated conference” after all.  One idea is to come with an idea for a session that you would like to have.  It does not matter if you are an expert on the subject or not.  In fact, it would probably be best if you were not.  That way you could locate others who are attending to step up and join in.  This is a wonderful way to gather the brain trust available and really make something happen. Ideally Barcamp Nigeria should not be about sessions which are led the same way we find at conferences.   This is about the synergy of the group and your voice being heard.
No spectators.  Only participants.
Every attendee is urged to be a participant, so come with your questions, ideas and it will be a remarkable event.

May 22nd 2010 is the date and the venue is CITS University Of Lagos.

Be there!!!!

A Few House Rules for BarCamp Nigeria

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

We are getting so excited about Barcamp Nigeria. We have a ton of AMAZING Thought Leaders coming and we are almost OUT of seats due to lots of interested people registering.

It feels like we are counting down for Christmas morning and we are actually all looking forward to the D-Day

For a lot of you attending, this may be your first BarCamp. So for everyone new to BarCamp, we wanted to share with you one of our favorite elements of this event, which is the panel session, where every attendee can share real life experiences and brainstorm on issues together in different groups.

Yet, one of the coolest things about BarCamp is that it is a day to actually physically and emotionally ‘take off your logo’ and be a part of the industry to share ideas, best practices and learn from experts and other technopreneurs in the industry for the betterment of your startup and most importantly the Nigerian Web Audience.

So on May 22nd, show up early, bring your laptop, bring your charger, come ready to learn and share! And on this day, come with all your questions written down. We are so excited to have you and look forward to meeting you in person!
