BarCamp is a “participatory unconference”, so you, the attendees are going to be making the event as great as it can be. The idea is that everyone who comes takes part in some way: which might be running a session, taking photos, live blogging, live facebooking and tweeting of the event etc. For those of you who want to run a session, this is what you need to know:
Break-out Sessions
Session slots are a few minutes long, and have at least 2 minutes between them. We will have people group themselves for sessions, and plenty of break out spaces for continuing the conversation afterward.
Session Topics
You can run a session on anything you want, really, anything. Your session needn’t be technical or formal, and can be in any style you are comfortable with. We had sessions on all sorts of topics last year such as SEO, Open Source, Monetization, Revenue & Business Models (and plenty of other stuff), right through to advanced discussions on Venture Capitalists, Programming, Hardware and Web Design. Take your pick!
A good tip is to head to sessions that you know less about, that way you will learn more. If you don’t see a session on something you are interested in, you might want to run a discussion or sharing session where you can all just talk about something – even if its about your dissatisfaction of the event.
Some confirmed topics to be discussed at Barcamp Nigeria are:
How to Create local content for Nigerian web market
How the use of Social Media can change your business
Internet Business Models
How and why you should get funding for your start-up
If you wish to have a session or for further enquiries, please send an e-mail to barcampnigeria@gmail.com or call 08037239053 - Femi
Thank You.

So many people have been asking me on facebook, What is Barcamp? Some are asking if its some kind of bar where they can get alcohol. lol
It’s got nothing to do with alcohol or the great outdoors – but it has everything to do with community, teaching and learning.
A ‘barcamp’ is an informal, user-driven conference. Barcamps are usually held in almost all the countries and specific cities worldwide.
I had my first-ever barcamp experience back in April 2009 and it was a great experience. You can see pictures here
So on May 22 2010 from 9am, lets all meet @ University of Lagos (Unilag) CITS Building.
Here are 10 reasons why you should attend Barcamp Nigeria 2010
1. It is Free
Education is not free, even the venue for this event is a learning institution, learning isn’t free there. But this event is free for all.
2. Networking
Network with like-minded individuals, those passionate about the Nigerian ICT Industry, Programmers, Bloggers, and yes Venture Capitalists.
3. It’s User Generated
You, the participant determines what will be discussed.
You chose and create the topics and sessions that you wish to be highlighted at the event. You can teach and learn from others.
4. There is Food
Yes, there will be free food for everyone. So we expect you to come and share not just knowledge, but also the food with us.
5. Connect one on one with people you know online
Barcamp is a great way to get to know someone you’ve been interacting with online! Since the atmosphere is relaxed and conversational, there are plenty of opportunities to get to know alot of like-minded people.
6. Sharing Ideas
Attending this Un-conference presents a goldmine of opportunities, you can garner Million Naira Ideas from attendees at the event.
7. Mix of content
With an event like this, there’s pretty much something for everyone whether your a Graphic artist, mobile application developer, php programmer,Java prorammer, Drupal or Joomla, there is always someone in house to brainstorm with.
8. Explore innovative ICT products and services
Be the first to find out and explore upcoming releases from the best of Nigeria’s web 2.0 industry innovators, start-ups and entrepreneurs. If you have anything cooking in the lab at the moment, you can use Barcamp Nigeria as an opportunity to launch, and believe me all the attendees will be your first users or customers.
9. Listen to success stories, experiences and ideas from our keynote speakers
There will be keynote speaker at the event to share with us their experiences on starting a company and what benefits the Nigerian tech/web industry can offer.
10. Its an informal conference
You don’t have to dress all suited up with a tie e.t.c
It’s a place to come feel relaxed, learn, enjoy and share.
Don’t miss this event for anything in this world. There will be live streaming, live blogging, live tweeting.
Always use this hashtag in your tweets #bcnigeria

At BarCamp, a group of enthusiastic people gather to share their knowledge about technology and anything else they are interested in. They do this by attending presentations given by other attendees – and giving presentations themselves, of course. A BarCamp presentation can be as formal or informal as you like. You can go to any session you like, and if you don’t find a session interesting, you can leave and go to another. Everyone is encouraged to give a session or participate in whatever way they can. When sessions aren’t running, there’s usually other fun stuff happening: food and drinks, networking, panels and many more. Don’t forget the Date is 22nd of May 2010 and the venue is CITS Building, University Of Lagos. It starts from 9am, so be there!!!

If you have never been to a BarCamp before, we would love you to come along to BarCamp Nigeria 2010! It’s great fun and we are always looking for new folks to attend – BarCamp is all about the people. This is the second edition of Barcamp Nigeria.
Last years event took place on the 25th of April 2009 @ Tom Associates Building, Anthony, Lagos. Yes i know you”ll be wondering why Lagos again this year, not to worry, we are planning on making Barcamp a quarterly thing, so our next venue locations will be outside Lagos.
Last year we had keynote speakers like Justin Hartman. He is the MD and co-founder of Afrigator - Africa’s largest social media aggregator and blog directory. He is based in South Africa. Afrigator is a startup he co-founded in April 2007. It grew steadily to a point where a stake was sold to MIH Print Africa. We also had Mrs. Victoria N’dee Uwadoka. She works with Microsoft Nigeria as the PR & Events Manager for Anglophone West Africa. She is charged with managing the company’s image agenda, media relationships, agency support and strategic events across the Anglophone West Africa region.
This year we have confirmed two keynote speakers and they are Simdul Shagaya, the Founder of Alarena.com and Chinenye Mba-Ozoukwo of eShekel.
The two speakers have firm grasp of the Nigerian technology market and will be pleased to share their insight with us at the event. To view a detailed profile of the speakers, click here
